Background

He joined Dai-ichi Life Insurance in April 1967. He served as General Manager of the International Planning Department from April 1989 and of the Research Department from April 1991, and became Director and General Manager of the Research Department in July 1994. In October 1995 he also took on the post of head of the Planning and Public Relations Division, then became Managing Director in April 1997, Senior Managing Director in April 2001 and Representative Director and Senior Managing Director in April 2003. He was a planning man who had passed through international planning, research and public relations.

Education: Hitotsubashi University, Faculty of Commerce (1967)

Selection

In July 2004 he moved from Representative Director and Senior Managing Director to President, succeeding Tomijiro Morita, who became Representative Director and Chairman that month. Dai-ichi Life was then still a mutual company, as it had been since its founding in 1902; its conversion to a stock company would come in April 2010. The man who had run the Planning and Public Relations Division under his predecessor simply took over from him.

Initiatives

In December 2006 the company set up Dai-ichi Frontier Life to sell savings-type products through bank counters. It opened an office in Vietnam in January 2007 and in December that year invested in Star Union Dai-ichi Life in India. In August 2008 it invested in Australia's Tower Australia (later TAL) and signed a business alliance. In April 2010, the month he stepped down, the mutual company that had existed for 108 years since 1902 became a stock company and listed on the First Section of the Tokyo Stock Exchange.
