Background
He joined Dai-ichi Life Insurance in April 1964. He became General Manager of the Investment Planning Department in April 1990 and head of the Investment Division and General Manager of the Investment Planning Department in April 1991, and was promoted to Director in July that year. He became Managing Director in April 1993 and Representative Director and Executive Vice President in April 1996. He was an investment man, having spent more than a decade in asset management before joining the board.
Selection
In April 1997 he moved from Representative Director and Executive Vice President to President, just one year after becoming Executive Vice President. At the time, Dai-ichi Life had remained a mutual company since its founding in 1902 and had no way to raise capital by issuing shares. The appointment appears to have put the former head of asset management at the top.
