Background
He joined Taisho Marine and Fire Insurance in 1972. When Mitsui Sumitomo Insurance was formed in October 2001 through the merger of Mitsui Marine and Fire Insurance and Sumitomo Marine and Fire Insurance, he became Executive Officer and General Manager of the Fire and Casualty Insurance Department, then worked in regional sales as head of the Chugoku region and of the Kanagawa-Shizuoka region. He became President of the company in June 2006 and added the role of Chief Executive Officer that August.
Selection
In August 2007, the board of Mitsui Sumitomo Insurance resolved to establish a holding company through a sole share transfer. Mitsui Sumitomo Insurance Group Holdings was launched in April 2008 and listed simultaneously on the first sections of the Tokyo, Osaka and Nagoya stock exchanges. Egashira, President of the core company, also became the holding company's first President. As a sole share transfer with no merger partner, the move appears to have been meant to set up a vehicle for future reorganization in advance.
Initiatives
In January 2009 he agreed to begin talks with Aioi Insurance and Nissay Dowa General Insurance on a business integration and alliance. In April 2010 the two companies became major consolidated subsidiaries through share exchanges, and the company name was changed to MS&AD Insurance Group Holdings. Toyota Motor was Aioi's largest shareholder with 33.40%, and Nippon Life Insurance held 35.38% of Nissay Dowa, so both differed from Mitsui Sumitomo Insurance in sales networks and capital affiliation. The three companies' combined net premiums written reached ¥2,476.9 billion as of the end of March 2008, a 33.2% domestic share.
