Background

He joined Taisho Marine and Fire Insurance in 1978. In April 2008 he became Executive Officer and General Manager of the Corporate Quality Management Department at Mitsui Sumitomo Insurance, then Director and Managing Executive Officer in April 2012 and Director and Executive Vice President in April 2015. He became President of the company in April 2016 and at the same time an Executive Officer of the holding company. Like the first President, Toshiaki Egashira, he came from Taisho Marine.

Education: University of Tokyo, Faculty of Economics (1978)

Selection

He became President of the holding company in June 2020, succeeding Yasuyoshi Karasawa. This made two successive cases, after Karasawa, of a former President of Mitsui Sumitomo Insurance moving up to lead the holding company. In the fiscal year ended March 2020, the year before he took office, ordinary income was ¥5,168.4 billion and net income ¥143.0 billion, down from ¥192.7 billion the previous year. Twelve years after the holding company's launch, its core units Mitsui Sumitomo Insurance and Aioi Nissay Dowa Insurance still stood side by side without merging.

Initiatives

In October 2020 he sold all shares of Amlin plc and reorganized the overseas business, keeping the MS Amlin brand while withdrawing from unprofitable lines in its Lloyd's operations. In 2022 the group invested in the US MGA platform Transverse Insurance Group, shifting from repeated large acquisitions to bolt-on investments in small and mid-sized North American businesses. In 2024 the Japan Fair Trade Commission imposed a ¥1.3 billion surcharge over premium coordination. The company was also pressed to tighten its controls in response to the Bigmotor affair and information leaks.
