Background
He joined Nippon Fire and Marine Insurance in 1967 and worked in sales, as General Manager of Metropolitan Sales Department No. 1, Fukushima branch manager, Hiroshima branch manager and General Manager of Corporate Sales Department No. 4. He became an Executive Officer in June 1999, Managing Executive Officer in April 2002, Senior Managing Executive Officer in June 2004 and Representative Director and Executive Vice President in June 2005. Nippon Fire merged with Koa Fire and Marine Insurance in 2001 to form Nipponkoa Insurance, and Hyodo became its Representative Director, President and Chief Executive Officer in April 2007.
Selection
In April 2010 Sompo Japan Insurance and Nipponkoa Insurance established the holding company NKSJ Holdings through a joint share transfer. Hyodo moved from President of Nipponkoa to Representative Director, Chairman and CEO of the holding company, and Masatoshi Sato, President of Sompo Japan, became Representative Director and President. Group management began with the two former companies sharing the chairman and president posts.
Initiatives
NKSJ listed on the First Sections of the Tokyo and Osaka stock exchanges on the day it was established. Sompo Japan and Nipponkoa were kept as separate operating companies, with the holding company overseeing both. The life insurance subsidiaries merged in October 2011, unified as NKSJ Himawari Life. In the fiscal year ended March 2011, the first year of the integration, the group posted a net loss of ¥12.9 billion on ordinary income of ¥2,621.6 billion.
