Background
He joined Yasuda Fire and Marine Insurance in 1978 and became Managing Executive Officer of Sompo Japan Insurance in April 2007. When NKSJ Holdings was formed in April 2010 he became Director and Managing Executive Officer, and in July that year Representative Director and President of Sompo Japan. Like Masatoshi Sato he came from Yasuda Fire, making two consecutive holding company Presidents from the former Sompo Japan side.
Selection
In April 2012 he succeeded Masatoshi Sato as Representative Director and President of the holding company while remaining President of Sompo Japan. In the fiscal year ended March 2012, the year before he took office, insurance claims from the Thai floods and the reversal of deferred tax assets produced a net loss of ¥92.2 billion, a second straight year in the red. The non-life operating companies remained separate, and their unification was put off until September 2014.
Initiatives
In September 2014 the group unified its non-life operating companies as "Sompo Japan Nipponkoa Insurance" and integrated their product lines at the same time. It entered nursing care by acquiring Watami no Kaigo in December 2015 and Message in March 2016, and created a nursing care and healthcare segment in April 2016. In October 2016 it renamed the holding company SOMPO Holdings, and in March 2017 completed the $6.3 billion acquisition of Endurance Specialty Holdings. In 2018 it moved to a company-with-nominating-committee structure and formalized the Group CEO system.
