Background
He joined Sumitomo Trust and Banking in April 1984. He became Executive Officer in June 2010, Director and Managing Executive Officer in April 2012 and Director and Senior Managing Executive Officer in April 2017, and became Executive Officer and President in April 2021, 37 years after joining. From June that year he served as Director, Executive Officer and President, holding both board and executive roles.

In the fiscal year ended March 2021, the year before he took office, consolidated ordinary income was ¥1,380.4 billion, ordinary profit ¥183.2 billion and net income ¥142.1 billion, all down from the prior year's ¥1,535.4 billion, ¥257.7 billion and ¥163.0 billion. With his appointment the holding company's top title became Executive Officer and President, and Takakura served five years until April 2026.

In October 2024 the holding company changed its name from Sumitomo Mitsui Trust Holdings to Sumitomo Mitsui Trust Group.
