Background
He joined Mitsui Trust and Banking in April 1977. He became Executive Officer in July 2003, Managing Executive Officer in May 2006 and Senior Managing Executive Officer in July 2009, and Director and Executive Vice President in April 2011. At the holding company he became Director and Executive Vice President in June 2010, and in April 2012, the month he became President, he also became Chairman of Sumitomo Mitsui Trust Bank, formed by merger.

In April 2012 he succeeded Kazuo Tanabe as President. The holding company had been formed in April 2011 through the business integration of Chuo Mitsui Trust Holdings and Sumitomo Trust and Banking, and the change came a year later. Consolidated ordinary income had gone from ¥350.9 billion in the fiscal year ended March 2011 to ¥1,323.2 billion in the FY ended March 2012, spanning the integration, and net income from ¥47.2 billion to ¥164.6 billion.
Initiatives
In April 2012, the month he took office, Chuo Mitsui Trust and Banking, Chuo Mitsui Asset Trust and Banking and Sumitomo Trust and Banking merged to form Sumitomo Mitsui Trust Bank, and Kitamura also became its Chairman. Over his five years, consolidated results went from ordinary income of ¥1,115.7 billion and net income of ¥133.7 billion in the fiscal year ended March 2013 to ordinary income of ¥1,261.2 billion and net income of ¥121.4 billion in the FY ended March 2017, his final year. Net income peaked at ¥166.9 billion in the FY ended March 2016.
