Background

He joined PARCO in April 1981. He became Executive Officer and head of the Store Operations Bureau in March 2004, Managing Executive Officer and head of the Store Management Bureau in March 2007, and Senior Managing Executive Officer, head of the Store Operations Division and head of the Store Management Bureau in March 2008, also joining the board in May that year. His officer titles were consistently in store operations and store management, without stints in the planning office or affiliated businesses. As of the fiscal year ended February 2019 he held 43,000 company shares.

Selection

In May 2011 he succeeded Shuichi Hirano as Director, Representative Executive Officer and President. PARCO had moved to a company-with-committees structure in May 2003, with the President serving as a representative executive officer chosen by the board. Hirano had joined in April 1981 like Makiyama and, after serving as manager of Nagoya PARCO and in charge of the planning office, became Representative Executive Officer and President in March 2008. In the handover Hirano moved to Senior Managing Executive Officer in charge of business management, swapping posts with Makiyama, who had held that same title until then.

Initiatives

In August 2012, the year after he took office, J. Front Retailing acquired PARCO shares through a tender offer and became its parent. Thereafter, in addition to existing PARCO buildings, the company opened "ZERO GATE" facilities one after another, starting with Shinsaibashi-Dotonbori in April 2013 and following in Hiroshima, Nagoya, Sapporo, Kyoto, Harajuku and Sannomiya. In November 2017 it opened "PARCO_ya Ueno" in Ueno. In the fiscal year ended February 2019 the major shareholders were J. Front Retailing with 64.98%, AEON with 8.15% and Credit Saison with 7.66%.
