Background

He graduated from the vocational division of Waseda University in March 1934 and joined Takashimaya in March 1941. He became a councillor in October 1948, Osaka branch manager in August 1952 and a Director in September that year, Managing Director in October 1954 and Representative Director and Senior Managing Director in October 1956. He joined the board the month after becoming Osaka branch manager; it took him 11 years from joining to become a Director and 19 years to become President. While President he also served as President of Yokohama Takashimaya.

Education: Waseda University, Professional Course (1934)

Selection

In October 1960 he succeeded Keizo Iida as President. Keizo Iida had graduated from Keio University's Faculty of Law in 1926, joined in June that year, became Representative Director and Senior Managing Director in September 1943 and President in February 1952, and moved to Chairman in that same October 1960. Others in the same list of officers took far longer to reach the board after joining: Gentaro Kitaoka 26 years, Ryoji Ota 32 years and Kazuo Yamaya 38 years, while Shinichi Iida took 11 years and Tetsutaro Iida 12. The two bearing the founding family's Iida name appear to have been advanced ahead in board appointments.

Initiatives

In December 1963, three years after he took office, the company established Toshin Development to develop and operate commercial facilities. The Tamagawa store, opened in November 1969, surrounded its anchor store with commercial facilities and collected rent from them. Non-consolidated net sales grew from ¥54.4 billion in the fiscal year ended February 1963 to ¥129.6 billion in the FY ended February 1970, ¥265.7 billion in the FY ended February 1975 and ¥414.6 billion in the FY ended February 1981. Ordinary profit rose from ¥6.0 billion in the FY ended February 1975 to ¥10.6 billion in the FY ended February 1981.
