Background

He joined K. Hattori & Co. (now Seiko Group) in March 1960 and became General Manager of Accounting in September 1982. He became a Director of Hattori Seiko in June 1985, rose through Managing Director and Senior Managing Director to Director and Executive Vice President in June 1997, spending 16 years as an officer before becoming President. Among the major shareholders in the fiscal year ended March 2006, Reijiro Hattori with 5.3%, Junichi Hattori with 4.2% and Shinji Hattori with 3.4% were listed by name. Against the 6,101,000 shares held by Shinji Hattori on the same board, Koichi Murano held 147,000.

Selection

In June 2001 he became Representative Director and President of Seiko Corporation. The carving out of businesses had been under way since before he took office, with the establishment of Seiko Clock and Seiko Precision and the spin-off of the eyewear business in January 1996 and the spin-off of the sports and toiletries businesses in May 2000. In the same month of June 2001, Shinji Hattori became Representative Director and President of Seiko Precision, moving to Representative Director and President of Seiko Watch in June 2003. The arrangement had an officer from accounting running the holding company while the founding family handled the operating companies.

Initiatives

In July 2001 the watch business was spun off as Seiko Watch Corporation, completing Seiko Corporation's transition to a holding company. In July 2007 the company changed its name to Seiko Holdings Corporation. Consolidated net sales fell from ¥213.7 billion in the fiscal year ended March 2006 to ¥174.0 billion in the FY ended March 2009, a year with an ordinary loss of ¥4.7 billion, followed by another ordinary loss of ¥1.9 billion in the FY ended March 2010. In June 2009 he became Representative Director, Chairman and President, holding both posts himself.
