Background

He joined the company in 1983 and spent a long career in energy plants. He became General Manager of Corporate Planning in July 2010, Executive Officer and head of the Machinery and Transportation Systems Business Unit in April 2013, and President and CEO in April 2015. The highest post listed for him in the annual securities report was Executive Officer, and he became President without serving as Representative Director.

Education: University of Tokyo, Faculty of Engineering (1983)

Selection

In April 2015 he succeeded Masami Iijima as President and CEO. In the fiscal year ended March 2015, the year before he took office, consolidated revenue was ¥5,404.9 billion and profit ¥306.4 billion, down from ¥350.0 billion the previous year. In the FY ended March 2016, right after he took office, impairments in the Chilean copper business and valuation losses related to U.S. shale gas combined to produce a loss of ¥83.4 billion, the first full-year loss since the founding of Daiichi Bussan. The change appears to have put an Executive Officer who had led Machinery and Transportation Systems in charge of reshaping an earnings base tilted toward resources.

Initiatives

He carved out earnings less exposed to market swings as core earning power and switched to managing its buildup. Profit recovered to ¥306.1 billion in the fiscal year ended March 2017 and reached ¥414.2 billion in the FY ended March 2019. In March 2019 the company made an additional investment in Malaysia's IHH Healthcare to become its largest shareholder, strengthening the non-resource areas of healthcare, food and infrastructure while keeping its upstream iron ore and LNG positions. In May 2020 its new head office building was completed.
