Background

He joined the company in 1961 and built his career in transportation equipment and heavy electrical machinery. After serving as President of Mitsui & Co. (U.S.A.) he became Senior Managing Director, and President in June 2000. He is a career employee who rose to President through running an overseas subsidiary rather than heading a business unit at the head office.

Education: Tokyo University of Foreign Studies, Portuguese (1961)

Selection

In June 2000 he succeeded Shigeji Ueshima as President. In the fiscal year ended March 2000, the year before he took office, consolidated net sales were ¥13,200.7 billion and net income ¥35.7 billion, with sales down more than ¥3.8 trillion from ¥17,035.0 billion five years earlier. Appointed from Senior Managing Director after serving as President of Mitsui & Co. (U.S.A.), he appears to have been chosen for his overseas business experience.

Initiatives

On June 1, 2001, the company launched a Retail Business Unit dedicated to dealings with the Ito-Yokado Group. It set a goal of expanding transactions of about ¥300 billion a year to ¥1 trillion in three years and, unlike Mitsubishi Corporation, which invested ¥210.0 billion in Lawson, or C. Itoh, which invested ¥135.0 billion in FamilyMart, chose an alliance without a capital stake. On July 3, 2002, the Special Investigation Department of the Tokyo District Public Prosecutors Office arrested three employees over bid rigging for a diesel power plant on Kunashiri Island. He limited the response to voluntarily returning 20% of officers' pay for three months and denied that he would resign to take responsibility.
