Background
Born in Tokyo in 1916, he graduated from the Department of Mechanical Engineering at Tokyo Institute of Technology in December 1941. He joined Citizen Watch in October 1945, became a Director in May 1962 and Managing Director in November 1969. From June 1971, as head of the Watch Production Division, he also served as manager of the Tanashi Works and was in charge of the Precision Machinery Division and the Technical Research Laboratory. He was an engineer who long led the product-making side of the company.
Selection
In June 1981 he succeeded Eiichi Yamada as President, after rising to Senior Managing Director in June 1977 and Executive Vice President in June 1979. His predecessor moved to Representative Director and Chairman in the same month, ending a presidency that had lasted 35 years from 1946. It took him 35 years and eight months from joining to become President.
Initiatives
In June 1981, when he became President, Morio Hayami was promoted to Executive Vice President and Michio Nakajima to Senior Managing Director at the same time. At that point nine of the 14 Directors had engineering degrees, a lineup dominated by officers from the production side. Nakajima later succeeded him as President.
