Background
Born in Shizuoka Prefecture in 1908, he graduated from Tokyo University of Commerce in March 1931 and joined Mitsui Life Insurance in April of that year. He left the company in November 1936 and moved to Citizen Watch in November 1937. He became a Director in September 1941, less than four years after joining, Managing Director in April 1944 and Senior Managing Director in October 1945. His background was not in watchmaking but in administration at an insurance company.
Selection
He became Representative Director and President in March 1946, five months after rising to Senior Managing Director in October 1945, during the reconstruction period right after Japan's defeat. Yuji Watanabe, listed in the same officer roster, had joined in May 1930 and took 29 years to become a Director, so Yamada's appointment nine years after joining in 1937 appears to have broken with the company's seniority order.
Initiatives
While President he also headed affiliated companies. He became Representative Director and President of the sales company Citizen Shoji in June 1949 and Chairman of the Board of Rhythm Watch in May 1965, and in April 1971 stepped back to Director at Citizen Shoji. His presidency lasted 35 years, from March 1946 to June 1981, when he moved to Representative Director and Chairman and handed the presidency to Rokuya Yamazaki.
