Background

After graduating from the Department of Precision Engineering in the Faculty of Engineering at Kyoto University in 1965, he joined Canon. He became a Director in 1997 and Executive Vice President in 2006, and Representative Director and President in May of that year. In the fiscal year ended December 2005, the year before he took office, consolidated net sales were ¥3,754.1 billion and operating income ¥583.0 billion. The company had listed on the New York Stock Exchange in September 2000 and in 2001 had set up Canon Vietnam and Canon (Suzhou) in China.

Education: Kyoto University, Faculty of Engineering, Precision Engineering (1965)

Selection

In May 2006 he succeeded Fujio Mitarai as President. Mitarai moved to Representative Director and Chairman and remained at the center of management. In the fiscal year ended December 2006, when he took office, consolidated net sales were ¥4,156.7 billion and operating income ¥707.0 billion, rising to ¥4,481.3 billion and ¥756.6 billion in the FY ended December 2007. The change put a career employee who had come up through camera development in charge of running the expanded business.

Initiatives

During his tenure, from the fiscal year ended December 2008 to the FY ended December 2009, consolidated net sales fell from ¥4,094.1 billion to ¥3,209.2 billion and operating income from ¥496.1 billion to ¥217.0 billion. Office multifunction devices had saturated developed markets, and replacement cycles had lengthened. In November 2009 the company announced it would make Dutch printer maker Océ a consolidated subsidiary through a tender offer, at €8.6 per share or about €730 million in total, its largest acquisition at the time. A company that had always insisted on in-house development had become a buyer of other companies' technology and sales channels.
