Background
He joined Canon in 1975, becoming a Director and Chief Executive of the Image Communication Products Operations in 2007, Managing Director in 2010 and Senior Managing Director in 2014. From heading the imaging business, he became Representative Director, President and COO in March 2016. In the fiscal year ended December 2015, the year before he took office, consolidated net sales were ¥3,800.2 billion and income before income taxes ¥347.4 billion.

In March 2016 he succeeded Fujio Mitarai as President and COO. Mitarai stayed on as Chairman and CEO, separating the CEO and President roles. In the fiscal year ended December 2016, consolidated net sales were ¥3,401.4 billion and income before income taxes ¥244.6 billion, down from ¥3,800.2 billion and ¥347.4 billion in the previous year. In December of that year Canon acquired Toshiba Medical Systems for ¥665.5 billion, making a full-scale entry into medical equipment.
Initiatives
His tenure lasted about four years, from March 2016 to May 2020, ending when Fujio Mitarai became President for the third time. It was a period of integrating the businesses gained through acquisitions, which the company internally called its "four pillars": industrial equipment, commercial printing, network cameras and medical equipment. Acquisition spending on new businesses since 2010 exceeded ¥1 trillion in total. Consolidated net sales recovered to ¥4,080.0 billion in the fiscal year ended December 2017, then fell to ¥3,951.9 billion in the FY ended December 2018 and ¥3,593.2 billion in the FY ended December 2019.
