Background
He joined Canon Camera in 1951 and in 1972 became a Director while also serving as Deputy Director of the Central Research Laboratory. He became Representative Director and President in March 1989. The company had been expanding production overseas, setting up Canon Virginia in the United States in November 1985 and Canon Opto in Malaysia in December 1988, and its consolidated net sales in the fiscal year ended December 1988 were ¥1,106.0 billion.
Selection
In March 1989 he succeeded Ryuzaburo Kaku as President, with Kaku moving to Representative Director and Chairman. During Kaku's 12 years Canon made office equipment its mainstay, and in 1990 it ranked fifth in Japan in consolidated ordinary income. In the fiscal year ended December 1988, the year before he took office, consolidated net sales were ¥1,106.0 billion and net income ¥37.1 billion. The change handed the expanded business to a successor from the technical side.
Initiatives
He continued the overseas production expansion begun under Kaku, setting up Canon Dalian Business Machines in China in September 1989 and Canon Hi-Tech in Thailand in August 1990. Consolidated net sales were ¥1,868.9 billion in the fiscal year ended December 1991 and ¥1,914.4 billion in the FY ended December 1992, while net income fell from ¥52.1 billion to ¥35.6 billion. He moved to Representative Director and Vice Chairman in March 1993 after four years in office.
