Background

He joined Tamron in March 1974 and became a Director four years later, in June 1978, at the age of 30. He rose to Managing Director in March 1987, Senior Managing Director in March 1999 and Representative Director and Executive Vice President in January 2001, and became Representative Director and President in March 2002. He spent all 28 years from joining to becoming President at Tamron alone. His shareholding at the end of the fiscal year ended December 2014 was only 40 thousand shares, and he was not a president with capital backing. At the end of the FY ended December 2009, the top shareholders were Newell with 17.34% and Sony with 11.08%, both operating companies.

Selection

Looking at the directors listed in the annual securities report for the fiscal year ended December 2014, the years from joining to becoming a Director were 18 for Hisaaki Nagashima, 24 for Hiroaki Arai, 32 for Shiro Ajisaka, 34 for Tadahiro Shimura and 40 for Hideyo Ose, with Morio Ono's four years standing out as remarkably short. There were 24 years from his becoming a Director in June 1978 to becoming President, during which he stepped in turn through Managing Director, Senior Managing Director and Executive Vice President. He moved from Executive Vice President to President in March 2002, one year and two months after becoming Executive Vice President in January 2001.

Initiatives

He raised the company's listing step by step. In December 2004 it canceled its over-the-counter registration with the Japan Securities Dealers Association and listed on the JASDAQ Securities Exchange, listed on the First Section of the Tokyo Stock Exchange in November 2006, and delisted from JASDAQ the following December. Production and sales bases were added in Shanghai, China in October 2005, Russia in March 2012, Vietnam in May that year and India in March 2013. Consolidated net sales grew from ¥59.6 billion in the fiscal year ended December 2005 to ¥68.2 billion in the FY ended December 2007, fell to ¥49.9 billion in the FY ended December 2009, and reached ¥73.6 billion in the FY ended December 2014, the highest of his tenure.
