Background

He joined Sugi Holdings in March 2006, became Managing Director of the operating company Sugi Pharmacy in March 2011 and its Representative Director and President in March 2017. In May 2018 he became Representative Director and Executive Vice President of the holding company. Among the major shareholders for the fiscal year ended February 2014, Sugi Shoji ranked first with 28.87%, and four individuals named Sugiura, including founder Hirokazu Sugiura, each held 2.98%. With the founding family still holding the capital, one of its members became President 15 years after joining.

In May 2021 he succeeded Eiichi Sakakibara as Representative Director and President. He was the first President named Sugiura in 12 years, since founder Hirokazu Sugiura became Representative Director and Chairman in May 2009. In the fiscal year ended February 2021, the year before he took office, consolidated net sales were ¥602.8 billion and operating income ¥34.0 billion, both above the previous year. The change came at a time when results were not deteriorating, and was an appointment that put succession to the founding family first.

Initiatives

In September 2024 the company made I&H (Hanshin Chozai Group), a major dispensing pharmacy chain, a subsidiary, expanding its dispensing business. Consolidated net sales grew from ¥625.5 billion in the fiscal year ended February 2022, his first year, to ¥878.0 billion in the FY ended February 2025 and ¥1,010.3 billion in the FY ended February 2026, and operating income from ¥32.1 billion to ¥48.6 billion. Net income over the same period went from ¥19.4 billion to ¥45.0 billion.
