Background
In December 1976 he opened Sugi Pharmacy in Nishio, Aichi Prefecture, and in March 1982 established Sugi Co. and became its Representative Director and President. He became Representative Director and Chairman in May 2009. Among the major shareholders for the fiscal year ended February 2013, Sugi Shoji ranked first with 28.87%, and Hirokazu Sugiura and three other individuals named Sugiura each held 2.98%, bringing the five together to 40.79%.
Selection
He had no predecessor. A little over five years after opening in December 1976, he established Sugi Co. in March 1982 and became its first President. He then served as President for 27 years, until stepping back to Representative Director and Chairman in May 2009. Net sales can be traced in the annual securities reports only from ¥52.4 billion in the fiscal year ended February 2002, and no figures remain showing the company's size at incorporation.
Initiatives
Non-consolidated net sales grew 2.3 times in four years, from ¥52.4 billion in the fiscal year ended February 2002 to ¥122.9 billion in the FY ended February 2006. In March 2007 the company made Japan Co. a wholly owned subsidiary through a share exchange, entering the Kanto region, and in September 2008 moved to a holding company structure and changed its name to Sugi Holdings. Consolidated net sales grew from ¥217.2 billion in the FY ended February 2007 to ¥272.2 billion in the FY ended February 2009, and ordinary income from ¥9.8 billion to ¥13.6 billion. Keeping its format of drugstores with in-store dispensing pharmacies, the company moved beyond the Tokai region through acquisition.
