Background

He joined Duck in April 1973 and Shinko Shiki in February 1976, then took part in founding BEAMS in May 1982 as Managing Director, and in October 1989 established United Arrows in Jingumae 2-chome, Shibuya, Tokyo, with capital of ¥50 million. He became Representative Director and President at its founding, and Tetsuya Iwaki joined the founding team as Senior Managing Director and General Manager of the Development Department. In the fiscal year ended March 2010 he himself was the second-largest shareholder with 9.61% of the outstanding shares.

Education: Meiji Gakuin University, Faculty of Economics (1973)

Selection

After handing the presidency to Tetsuya Iwaki in June 2004 and becoming Representative Director and Chairman, he returned to the presidency in April 2009 as Representative Director, President and Executive Officer. His predecessor Iwaki became not Chairman but Representative Director and Executive Vice President. In the fiscal year ended March 2009, the year before he took office, consolidated net sales rose to ¥79.7 billion, but ordinary income was ¥4.3 billion and net income ¥1.3 billion, down from ¥5.0 billion and ¥3.8 billion the year before. The appointment appears to have been the founder returning as President to restore profitability.

Initiatives

In the three years after his return, consolidated net sales grew from ¥79.7 billion in the fiscal year ended March 2009 to ¥102.1 billion in the FY ended March 2012, topping ¥100 billion for the first time. Ordinary income also recovered from ¥4.3 billion to ¥10.3 billion. ¥100 billion was the figure he himself had set in 1999 as the target to reach by 2009, and it was reached three years late. Underlying this scale was the layering of in-house labels built up since the founding years. In December 2010 the liquidation of subsidiary Perennial United Arrows was completed. In April 2012 he handed the presidency to Mitsuhiro Takeda and became Chairman.
