Background

He joined Shinoya in April 1979 and moved to Workman in May 1985. After serving as Deputy General Manager of Kanto Regional Sales from March 1991 and General Manager of Management Planning from January 1993, he became General Manager of Merchandise in September 1994. He was Director and General Manager of Merchandise from June 1997, Director and General Manager of Development from May 2002, and from June 2004, as Managing Director, oversaw the Development Division and Store Construction Department, handling both merchandise and store openings in turn. Workman was founded in August 1982, and he joined three years later.

Selection

He became Representative Director and President in December 2009, succeeding Sadami Yamane. Half a year earlier, in June 2009, Yoshio Tsuchiya, who had served as President and Chairman since the founding in 1982, stepped down as Representative Director and Chairman to become Chairman without representative authority. In the fiscal year ended March 2010, his first year, consolidated net sales were ¥33.3 billion and ordinary income ¥4.4 billion, down from ¥34.8 billion and ¥4.8 billion the year before. The Managing Director chosen had dealt with stores and product lineups, moving from merchandise to development and then to the Development Division and Store Construction Department.

Initiatives

The company's listing moved to JASDAQ of the Osaka Securities Exchange in April 2010 and to JASDAQ (Standard) of the Tokyo Stock Exchange in July 2013. In July 2013 it opened the Ryuo Distribution Center and Ryuo Regional Headquarters in Ryuo, Gamo District, Shiga Prefecture, and closed the Komaki Distribution Center opened in March 1995. It opened regional headquarters in western Japan, in Hiroshima in June 2009 and Fukuoka in May 2011, and in January 2018 opened its 1,000th store in Takamatsu, Kagawa Prefecture. In September 2018 it opened the first Workman Plus store in Tachikawa, Tokyo. Non-consolidated ordinary income rose from ¥7.9 billion in the fiscal year ended March 2012 to ¥14.8 billion in the FY ended March 2019.
