Background

Born on April 18, 1948, he joined Nippon Life Insurance Company in April 1972. He served as head of the London office and president of the London subsidiary from April 1992, General Manager of International Operations from April 1995 and General Manager of Public Affairs from April 1998, working in international business and external negotiations. In April 2003 he moved to Daisei Building Management to handle PFI projects, becoming a director in June 2005. He became President of Lifenet Insurance at 58, and after the listing the top ten major shareholders were all corporations, with no stake in Deguchi's own name.

Selection

Lifenet Insurance was established in October 2006 in Akasaka, Minato, Tokyo as the life insurance preparatory company NetLife Planning, and Deguchi became Representative Director and President that month. He was the first president, with no predecessor. Daisuke Iwase became Executive Vice President the same month, October 2006; Deguchi, born in 1948, and Iwase, born in March 1976, were 28 years apart. The company obtained its life insurance license in April 2008 and began operations that May, so the first year and seven months of his tenure were spent as an unlicensed preparatory company.

Initiatives

In November 2008, six months after starting operations, the company fully disclosed, product by product, the share of premiums representing loading for operating expenses. In February 2010 it launched the disability income insurance "Insurance for Working People," and in March 2012 listed on the Tokyo Stock Exchange Mothers market. In the fiscal year ended March 2012, the year of the listing, revenue was ¥3.8 billion with a net loss of ¥0.9 billion. The following year, FY ended March 2013, revenue was ¥6.0 billion and the net loss narrowed to ¥0.1 billion. In June 2013 he handed the presidency to Executive Vice President Daisuke Iwase.
