Background
He joined Hamamatsu Photonics in April 1983. He became a Director in December 2017, Managing Director and Managing Executive Officer in December 2020, and Representative Director and Senior Managing Executive Officer in December 2021. In 2024 the company made Denmark's NKT Photonics a subsidiary, diversifying into lasers and fiber optics. Maruno himself became chairman of its board in May 2024. After consolidated net sales of ¥221.4 billion in the fiscal year ended September 2023, results turned: FY ended September 2024 saw ¥204.0 billion with operating income of ¥32.1 billion, and FY ended September 2025 ¥212.1 billion with operating income of ¥16.2 billion, a second straight year of falling operating income.
