Background

He joined Hamamatsu Photonics in October 1984 and became Representative Director and President 25 years later, in December 2009. Following his predecessor Teruo Hiruma, he was the second consecutive president named Hiruma. Teruo Hiruma appeared in the shareholder register for the fiscal year ended September 2009 with a personal stake of 2.50%, fifth after the Hamamatsu Photonics Employee Stock Ownership Association at 5.07% and Toyota Motor at 5.01%. His title was changed to President and Executive Officer in December 2020, and after 13 years as President he stepped down in December 2022 to become Representative Director and Chairman.

In December 2009 he succeeded Teruo Hiruma as Representative Director and President. In the fiscal year ended September 2009, just before he took office, consolidated net sales were ¥72.0 billion and operating income ¥3.7 billion, with sales down 27% and operating income down 80% from ¥98.8 billion and ¥20.1 billion the previous year. In FY ended September 2010, the year after he took office, they recovered to ¥91.0 billion and ¥15.8 billion.

Over his 13 years in office consolidated net sales grew from ¥72.0 billion in the fiscal year ended September 2009 to ¥208.8 billion in FY ended September 2022, and operating income from ¥3.7 billion to ¥57.0 billion. Midway, in FY ended September 2014, net sales were ¥112.1 billion and operating income ¥21.7 billion, and in FY ended September 2015 ¥120.7 billion and ¥23.6 billion—only 1.6 to 1.7 times the level of his first year. Growth was concentrated in his final two years, with ¥169.0 billion and ¥34.3 billion in FY ended September 2021 and ¥208.8 billion and ¥57.0 billion in FY ended September 2022.
