Background

Teruo Hiruma was born in September 1926 and became a Director of Hamamatsu TV (now Hamamatsu Photonics) in September 1953, the same month Hamamatsu TV was established. Whereas the careers of Haruji Otsuka and Junichi Takeuchi on the same board list begin with the year they joined the company, Hiruma's begins with his appointment as director. He became Representative Director and Senior Managing Director in November 1964 and President in October 1978. The annual securities report for the fiscal year ended September 2009 lists his shareholding at 2,096 thousand shares, the most of any officer listed.

Selection

Hiruma became President in October 1978, 25 years after becoming a director in September 1953 and 14 years after becoming Representative Director and Senior Managing Director in November 1964. He served as President for 31 years, also holding the chairmanship as Representative Director, Chairman and President from December 2004. In December 2009 he handed the presidency to Akira Hiruma and became Chairman of the Board. Akira Hiruma became President 25 years after joining in October 1984.

Initiatives

In April 1983 Hamamatsu TV changed its name to Hamamatsu Photonics, recentering its business on photonics. Its shares were registered for over-the-counter trading in August 1984, and it moved to the Second Section of the Tokyo Stock Exchange in July 1996 and the First Section in March 1998. It set up local subsidiaries in France in 1985 and the United Kingdom in 1988, and in August 1998 he became chairman of Beijing Hamamatsu Photon Techniques Inc. Consolidated net sales grew from ¥62.6 billion in the fiscal year ended September 2001 to ¥98.8 billion in FY ended September 2008.
