Background

He joined Hokushin Electric Works in April 1981 and became a Yokogawa Electric employee through the merger. He became Executive Officer in October 2008 and Director and Senior Vice President in April 2012, heading the IA Platform Business Headquarters. A career employee with no experience at other companies, he took 27 years from joining to become Executive Officer and 31 years to become President.

His predecessor was Shuzo Kaihori. Nishijima became Director and Senior Vice President in April 2012 and Representative Director and President the following April, in 2013. Before he took office the company had posted net losses for two straight years, ¥14.7 billion in the fiscal year ended March 2010 and ¥6.6 billion in the FY ended March 2011. The change came after results had recovered to consolidated net sales of ¥334.6 billion, operating income of ¥16.6 billion and net income of ¥5.9 billion in the FY ended March 2012.

Initiatives

From the fiscal year ended March 2013 to the FY ended March 2019, during his tenure, consolidated net sales rose from ¥347.8 billion to ¥403.7 billion. Over the same period operating income grew from ¥18.4 billion to ¥34.6 billion and net income from ¥14.6 billion to ¥28.4 billion. In the FY ended March 2016 the company posted operating income of ¥39.6 billion and net income of ¥30.1 billion. Consolidated employees fell from 19,837 in the FY ended March 2014 to 17,848 in the FY ended March 2019. In April 2019 he moved to Representative Director and Chairman, and Hitoshi Nara succeeded him as President.
