Background

He joined Seiko Epson in April 1970, became deputy head of the Information and Imaging Products Group in April 1995 and a Director in June that year. He left the board in June 1996 and from July handled the US sales company as Vice President of Epson America, Inc. He returned as deputy head of the Information and Imaging Products Group in November 1997, then became a Director in June 1998, Managing Director in June 1999, Senior Managing Director in April 2002 and Executive Vice President in April 2003. His career passed through both the information and imaging business, including printers, and US sales.

Education: Tohoku University, Faculty of Engineering, Mechanical Engineering (1970)

Selection

His predecessor Saburo Kusama joined in 1963, became head of the semiconductor business in April 1990 and President in April 2001, and moved to Chairman in April 2005. In the same month, Hanaoka rose from Executive Vice President to President. Fellow Executive Vice President Norio Niwa had also been President of Epson America, Inc., so both Executive Vice Presidents had run the US sales company. As of the fiscal year ended March 2006 the top shareholders were Aoyama Kigyo with 10.34%, Sanko Kigyo with 7.27% and Yasuo Hattori with 3.63%, and the President appears to have been chosen from insiders who came up through the business divisions.

Initiatives

In October 2005 the crystal device business was split off and began operating as Epson Toyocom Corporation. In December 2006 Sanyo Epson Imaging Devices was made a wholly owned subsidiary through additional share purchases and renamed Epson Imaging Devices. In the fiscal year ended March 2006, the year after he took office, the company posted a net loss of ¥17.9 billion on net sales of ¥1,549.5 billion, and another net loss of ¥7.0 billion in the FY ended March 2007. In the FY ended March 2008, his final year, net sales were ¥1,347.8 billion, operating income ¥57.6 billion and net income ¥19.0 billion.
