Background
He joined Texas Instruments Japan in April 1970 and became its Executive Vice President in April 1993. He became head of the semiconductor division in Kobe Steel's Electronics and Information Business in January 1998 and Representative Director and President of Nippon Foundry (now UMC Japan) in March 2000, spending over 30 years on the manufacturing and management side of semiconductors. Takao Adachi and Hideki Gomi, listed as full-time directors on the board for the fiscal year ended March 2011, were engineers who moved from NEC to Elpida Memory, but Sakamoto's career includes no NEC. He held only 2,500 shares of common stock.
Selection
He became Representative Director and President of Elpida Memory in November 2002 and was still in office as Representative Director, President and CEO in the annual securities report for the fiscal year ended March 2011. Before he took office, in the FY ended March 2002, the company posted an ordinary loss of ¥26.2 billion and a net loss of ¥26.6 billion on consolidated net sales of ¥78.3 billion, and losses continued in the FY ended March 2003 with net sales of ¥63.2 billion and a net loss of ¥26.1 billion. He moved in two years and eight months after becoming Representative Director and President of Nippon Foundry. The appointment appears to have entrusted a company with two straight years of losses to a man who had led manufacturing outside DRAM.
Initiatives
In May 2007 he became a director of Rexchip, which produces DRAM in Taiwan. In the fiscal year ended March 2009 the company posted a consolidated operating loss of ¥147.4 billion and a net loss of ¥178.9 billion, and in August that year it issued preferred shares to the Development Bank of Japan under the revised Act on Special Measures for Industrial Revitalization. Consolidated net sales recovered to ¥467.0 billion in the FY ended March 2010 and ¥514.3 billion in the FY ended March 2011, but net income was only ¥3.1 billion and ¥2.1 billion. In 2012 the company filed for protection under the Corporate Reorganization Act, ending in its transfer to Micron Technology of the US.
