Background

He joined Nissho Iwai in April 1973 and was deputy general manager of the Electronic Systems Department in April 1994. He moved to Nissho Electronics in October 1995 as a manager in the President's Office, becoming a Director in June 1999, Managing Director in June 2001 and Representative Director and President in June 2002. He became Chairman of that company in June 2009 and an adviser to Sojitz's machinery division in June 2010. From 2003 he taught as a part-time lecturer at the Shinshu University graduate school, Aoyama Gakuin University and elsewhere. His career was in procurement and sales in a trading company's electronics and information field; he had no experience on the manufacturing floor.

Education: Osaka University, Faculty of Engineering (1973)

Selection

He became an outside director of JVC Kenwood in June 2013 and moved to Representative Director, President, Executive Officer and COO in May 2014, an internal appointment 11 months after he joined as an outside director. In the fiscal year ended March 2014, the year before he took office, consolidated net sales were ¥316.3 billion and operating income ¥4.4 billion, with a net loss of ¥6.4 billion. In June 2016 he also became CEO, taking over the ultimate responsibility that Haruo Kawahara had held. Rather than an internal promotion, the change installed as President an outsider who had been involved for just under a year as an outside director.

Initiatives

In April 2016 the company established JVC Kenwood Public & Industrial Systems to expand its professional systems business, and the same month absorbed JVC Kenwood Optical Components, which made optical pickups and related parts. In April 2017 it absorbed JVC Kenwood Kenex and JVC Kenwood Home Electronics. In January 2018 it acquired all shares of Radio Activity of Italy, a maker of DMR-compliant repeaters, expanding its professional radio business. Consolidated net sales moved from ¥292.2 billion in the fiscal year ended March 2016 to ¥302.4 billion in the FY ended March 2018, and operating income from ¥4.5 billion to ¥6.9 billion.
