Background
Born in Hiroshima in 1904, he graduated from the economics department of Keio University in 1926 and joined the limited partnership NTN Seisakusho the following year. He became manager of the Mukogawa Plant in 1938 and a Director in 1941, spending the war and postwar years in both plant management and corporate leadership. He advanced to Managing Director in 1956 and Senior Managing Director in 1959, becoming President the same year. He was a career insider who took 32 years from joining to the presidency.
Selection
In 1959 he rose from Senior Managing Director to President. In the same year Chiyoo Izumi, Managing Director of Sanwa Bank, became Chairman, and Toshio Ogata, who had joined as a corporate auditor in 1948 after moving from the Thirty-Fourth Bank to manager of Sanwa Bank's Takamatsu branch, was promoted to Managing Director. The lineup appears to have welcomed a chairman from the main bank while placing a career insider from the founding era in the presidency.
Initiatives
In March 1960, the year after he took office, the company established Toyo Bearing Iwata Works, and in April 1961 it made Kongo Bearing a subsidiary. It set up NTN Wälzlager (Europa) in Erkrath, Germany, in January 1962 and NTN BEARING CORP. OF AMERICA in New York in January 1963. These were five years of adding domestic production bases while establishing the company's own sales companies in Europe and North America.
