Background
Born in Nagoya, Aichi Prefecture, in 1908, he followed his older brother Masayoshi Yasui into the family business, Yasui Sewing Machine Co., from 1921. He joined Nippon Sewing Machine Manufacturing as a Director at its founding in January 1934, served as Managing Director and Senior Managing Director, and became Director and Executive Vice President in October 1955. He served 19 years as Executive Vice President before becoming president, and from the founding onward he and his brother were at the center of management together.
Selection
In January 1975, as his brother Masayoshi Yasui became Chairman, he became President, 41 years after the company's founding in 1934 and after 19 years as Executive Vice President. In the same month Genichi Hirata, who joined in 1943, was promoted to Director and Executive Vice President, and Katsuji Kawashima, who joined in 1954, to Managing Director, an arrangement in which the founding family appears to have kept the presidency while handing day-to-day operations to career insiders.
Initiatives
In his four years in office he added two overseas affiliates. In March 1977 the company established Brother Industries in Australia, and in November 1978 set up Taiwan Brother Industries. Whereas the U.S. subsidiary of May 1954 and the Irish subsidiary of October 1958 were sales companies, Taiwan Brother Industries was established to manufacture home sewing machines. In February 1979 he stepped back to Chairman and handed the presidency to Genichi Hirata.
