Background

He joined Brother Industries in April 1979 and was seconded to Brother International Corporation (U.S.A.) in August 1982. He became its President in January 2000 and Chairman in January 2005, spending 23 years at the U.S. subsidiary. At the parent company he became a Director in June 2004, Director and Managing Executive Officer in April 2005, and Representative Director and Senior Managing Executive Officer in June 2006.

In June 2007 he succeeded Seiichi Hirata as Representative Director and President, three years after becoming a Director in June 2004 and in his 28th year with the company. In the fiscal year ended March 2007, just before he took office, consolidated net sales were ¥562.3 billion, operating income ¥51.3 billion and net income ¥28.9 billion; sales were down from ¥579.2 billion the year before, while operating income was up from ¥45.0 billion.

Initiatives

In the fiscal year ended March 2009, his second year, consolidated net sales were ¥482.2 billion and operating income ¥19.9 billion, down from ¥566.4 billion and ¥53.5 billion the year before. Later, net sales reached ¥707.2 billion and operating income ¥57.5 billion in FY ended March 2015, and in FY ended March 2018, his final year, net sales were ¥713.0 billion, operating income ¥68.7 billion and net income ¥50.0 billion. In June 2018 he stepped back to Representative Director and Chairman, and Ichiro Sasaki succeeded him.
