Background

He was born on November 3, 1933. In 1949, at 15, he joined Tsuzuki Seisakusho in Murakami, Sakaki Town, Nagano Prefecture, and spent 14 years running belt-driven lathes. In August 1963 he founded Takeuchi Mfg. Co., Ltd. in the same town with capital of ¥3 million and began business as a subcontractor to auto parts makers. Tsuzuki Seisakusho gave him a lathe in lieu of a retirement allowance, and its president stood as guarantor for a ¥1.5 million working capital loan. As of June 1993 he held 40% of the shares, and together with Tokyo Small and Medium Business Investment & Consultation's 20%, it was a privately held family company.

Selection

He became president upon the company's founding and had no predecessor. The plant started with six people including his older brother; he built it himself, laying the roof and nailing the boards, and for years used his home's converted parlor as the office. Cash was tight: there was a period when he withheld his own salary for five months and got by selling shares in business partners he had acquired at his previous employer. It began as a local contract machining shop with neither its own brand nor a sales network.

Initiatives

In September 1971 he developed a compact excavator and began production. Lacking a sales network of its own, the company sought an outlet for mass production through OEM supply to Yanmar Diesel from May 1975, but business shrank when the customer switched to making its own. In January 1978 it moved to selling directly under the Takeuchi brand and that same month began exporting compact excavators. In February 1979 it established TAKEUCHI MFG.(U.S.), LTD. in the United States, followed by local subsidiaries in the U.K. in October 1996 and France in May 2000. In December 2002 its shares were registered on JASDAQ.
