Background
He joined the company in April 1964 and became General Manager of the Administration Department in October 1989. After becoming a Director in June 1994, Managing Director in June 1998 and Senior Managing Director in June 2001, he rose to Representative Director and Executive Vice President in June 2002. He was the third consecutive career-insider president and came up through administration.
Selection
In June 2004 he succeeded Hiroyuki Kitai as Representative Director, President and COO; his predecessor's presidency had ended after three years. In the fiscal year ended March 2004, the year before he took office, consolidated net sales were ¥625.7 billion and ordinary income ¥45.2 billion, with 16,816 employees. The change took place with Noriyuki Inoue remaining as Chairman and CEO.
Initiatives
In 2006 the company acquired OYL of Malaysia for about ¥246.0 billion and, through its subsidiary McQuay, fully entered North America. Consolidated net sales grew to ¥1,290.8 billion and operating income to ¥128.5 billion in the fiscal year ended March 2008, but after the financial crisis fell to ¥1,023.9 billion and ¥44.0 billion in FY ended March 2010. In FY ended March 2011, his final year, they recovered to ¥1,160.3 billion and ¥75.5 billion. During his tenure he also chaired the internal control, CSR, disclosure and corporate ethics committees.
