Selection

In April 2013 he succeeded Kunio Noji as president. In the fiscal year ended March 2013, just before, consolidated net sales were ¥1,884.9 billion and income before taxes ¥204.6 billion, down from ¥1,981.7 billion and ¥249.6 billion the year before. In China, local rival Sany Heavy Industry had narrowly taken the top spot in annual unit sales from Komatsu in 2011. In mining equipment, Komatsu lacked machines for underground mining as well as 400-ton-class rope shovels, draglines and drills for surface mining.

Initiatives

On July 21, 2016, the company announced it would acquire Joy Global of the U.S. for $28.30 per share, about $2.89 billion in total, and completed the procedures in April 2017. Joy Global, founded in 1884, was a major mining equipment maker with about 13,400 employees and consolidated sales of about $3.17 billion for the fiscal year ended October 2015. The aim was to fill the gaps in a lineup that lacked underground mining machines and ultra-large rope shovels for surface mining.
