Selection

Non-consolidated net sales of ¥504.8 billion in 1980 exceeded the ¥475.7 billion of the fiscal year ended March 1999; non-consolidated ordinary income peaked in 1982 and consolidated net income in 1981. Tetsuya Katada became president just as growth in scale had stalled in the 1980s. While building out overseas production bases for construction equipment, he set out a "beyond construction equipment" strategy under which diversified non-construction businesses would account for half of sales.

Initiatives

In April 1993 the beyond-construction-equipment strategy was formally adopted and the company turned to investing aggressively in silicon wafers, but even before that, in 1991, the bulldozer statue that had long stood as a symbol on the roof of the Akasaka, Tokyo headquarters had already been removed. Next, some industrial machinery sales operations were moved to Komatsu Sanki and Komatsu Koki, set up in June 1994, and the casting business was transferred in October 1997 to Komatsu Castex, established that July. Komatsu Electronic Metals carried out more than ¥130 billion in capital expenditure over the three years from the fiscal year ended March 1997 to FY ended March 1999.
