He became a Director in June 1997 and Executive Officer in June 1999, then advanced to Managing Director and Managing Executive Officer in June 2001 and Director and Senior Executive Officer in April 2003. Selection

In June 2007 he was promoted to president, succeeding Masahiro Sakane, who became Representative Director and Chairman. The fiscal year ended March 2007 marked a third straight year of record profits. Still, the gap in scale with Caterpillar remained: in fiscal 2006 Caterpillar's total sales were about ¥5 trillion against Komatsu's roughly ¥1.8 trillion, and in construction equipment alone about ¥3.1 trillion against about ¥1.5 trillion. The Japanese market had shrunk from 40% of the world total in the early 1990s to around 15% in 2005, and in the leading U.S. market Caterpillar held a 40% share.
