Background
He joined Toyota Industries in April 1981, became a Director in June 2005, Managing Officer in June 2006 and Senior Managing Director in June 2010, and became president in June 2013. A career insider who spent all 32 years since joining at the company, he had no shareholding behind him. As of March 2015 the top ten shareholders were dominated by corporations: Toyota Motor at 23.51%, Denso at 9.1%, Towa Real Estate at 4.82% and Toyota Tsusho at 4.69%.
Selection
He succeeded Tetsuro Toyoda as president in June 2013. His predecessor's eight years spanned the global financial crisis; after consecutive net losses in the fiscal years ended March 2009 and March 2010, the company had recovered to consolidated net sales of ¥1,615.2 billion and operating income of ¥77.1 billion in FY ended March 2013. In March 2013 it had also made Cascade of the U.S. a subsidiary, starting to reach into areas adjacent to industrial vehicles through acquisitions. The handover to a career insider came after the recovery had been confirmed.
Initiatives
Entering the competition to propose automation of entire warehouses, the company made Bastian Solutions of the U.S. a subsidiary in April 2017 and acquired Vanderlande Industries of the Netherlands the following month. Bastian is a major logistics systems integrator, and Vanderlande provides logistics solutions worldwide. By the fiscal year ended March 2017, textile machinery had fallen to about 3.96% of consolidated sales. In October 2022 the Ishihama Plant began operating, and in FY ended March 2023 consolidated net sales reached ¥3,379.8 billion and operating income ¥169.9 billion.
