Background
He joined Marubeni in April 1986 and moved to Toyota Industries in June 1998. He became general manager of sales in the Textile Machinery Division in June 2010, Executive Officer in June 2012, Managing Officer in June 2016 and Operating Officer in June 2019, and became president in June 2023. A mid-career hire from a trading company, he built his career in sales of textile machinery, the founding business. He held only 9,000 shares and had no capital backing.
Selection
He succeeded Akira Onishi as president in June 2023. During his predecessor's ten years, consolidated net sales doubled from ¥1,615.2 billion to ¥3,379.8 billion, and operating income grew from ¥77.1 billion to ¥169.9 billion. He was the first president with an outside background since Taizo Ishida, the second president, who came from Toyoda Boshoku. With the founding textile machinery business below 4% of consolidated sales, a president emerged from its sales side.
Initiatives
In June 2025, a special-purpose company funded by Toyota Fudosan and Akio Toyoda proposed taking the company private at ¥16,300 per share, and the board endorsed it. Elliott Management of the U.S. opposed it, arguing the shares were worth ¥26,134, and the tender price was raised twice, to ¥18,800 and then ¥20,600. On March 24, 2026, the tender offer succeeded with 63.60% of shares tendered, and at about ¥5.9 trillion it became the largest M&A deal ever between Japanese companies. Toyota Industries will be delisted on June 1, 2026.
