Background

He joined Toyo Sash (now LIXIL) in April 1977 and became a Director and head of sales planning three years and eight months later, in December 1980. He joined the Representative Directors as Director and Executive Vice President in June 1990, became Chairman and CEO in November 2006, and from that month also served as Chairman and CEO of Tostem. The officer section of the annual securities report lists his shareholding as 60,000 shares, and his name was not among the top ten shareholders at the end of March 2012. His appointment to the board three years after joining appears to reflect his standing as a member of the founding family.

Selection

In June 2011 JS Group adopted a committee-based governance structure, and Yoichiro Ushioda became Director, Representative Executive Officer, Chairman and CEO, and chair of the nomination committee. That April, Tostem had just absorbed INAX, Shin Nikkei, Toyo Exterior and one other company and changed its name to LIXIL Corporation. Consolidated net sales in FY ended March 2011 were ¥1,214.9 billion and net income ¥15.8 billion, a recovery from a net loss of ¥5.3 billion the year before.

Initiatives

He served as Representative Executive Officer, Chairman and CEO for just two months, from June to August 2011; in August he handed the roles of President and CEO to Yoshiaki Fujimori, dropping the CEO title himself to become Representative Executive Officer, Chairman and chair of the nomination committee. At the same time he became Chairman (Representative Director) of LIXIL Corporation, and from June 2012 moved to the nominating side as chair of the board and a member of the nomination committee of JS Group.
