Background

He joined Ina Seito (now INAX) in April 1967 and, after heading Product Department No. 1 in the product planning division of the Sales Headquarters, rose to the board on the building materials and tile product side: Director and head of the new building materials division in 1992, Director and head of the tile division of the Building Materials Headquarters in 1994, and Managing Director and head of the Building Materials Headquarters in 1996. He then moved to administration as Managing Director and head of management control in 1999 and Senior Managing Director in the same role in 2000, and became President of INAX in October 2001. The officer section of the annual securities report for FY ended March 2010 lists his holding of JS Group shares as 29,000.

Education: Nagoya Institute of Technology, Faculty of Engineering, Ceramic Engineering (1967)

Selection

In June 2007, when he became Chairman of INAX, he moved directly to JS Group as Director, President and COO. This holding company was created in October 2001 when Tostem became a pure holding company through a corporate split, making INAX a wholly owned subsidiary through a share exchange that same month, and Sugino had spent six years as president of INAX, one of the two integrated companies. Yoichiro Ushioda had been Chairman and CEO since November 2006, so the roles were split with Ushioda as CEO and Sugino as COO, putting the former head of INAX on the president's side of the holding company.

Initiatives

Consolidated net sales fell from ¥1,103.8 billion in FY ended March 2008 to ¥982.6 billion in FY ended March 2010, when the company posted a net loss of ¥5.3 billion. Meanwhile INAX set up production subsidiaries in Vietnam in April 2007 and November 2008, and in July 2009 acquired shares of A-S CHINA PLUMBING PRODUCTS Ltd. and seven other companies, consolidating American Standard's Asian business. At home, it acquired shares of Sunwave Industry in June 2009, making it an equity-method affiliate, and established LIXIL Energy that December.
