Background

He graduated from the Faculty of Engineering of Kyushu Imperial University in 1923, joined Mitsui Mining and became a Director in February 1949. When Mitsui Mining's metals division was spun off in May 1950 as Kamioka Mining (renamed Mitsui Mining & Smelting in December 1952), he moved to the new company that month as Managing Director, helping set up the structure of a newly launched company with mines and smelters. From Fukuoka Prefecture, he came up on the technical side.

Education: Kyushu Imperial University, Faculty of Engineering (now Kyushu University, Faculty of Engineering) (1923)

Selection

In May 1958 he succeeded Hisaki Sato as President. Eight years after independence, capital had doubled from ¥2.4 billion in November 1954 to ¥4.8 billion in June 1958, and the modernization of smelting facilities continued. In this period of repeated capital spending and capital increases, an engineer who had served as a Director at Mitsui Mining appears to have been elevated from Managing Director.

Initiatives

He expanded the downstream side of an earnings structure that leaned on the Kamioka mine and smelter. In April 1962 the company absorbed Oji Kinzoku Kogyo and Showa Die Casting, setting up copper-rolling and die-casting divisions so that it could make rolled copper products and die-cast parts beyond the metal ingots themselves. Capital rose to ¥7.2 billion that May. Non-consolidated net sales grew from ¥22.3 billion in FY ended March 1957 to ¥33.5 billion in FY ended March 1963, while ordinary profit fell from ¥1.6 billion to ¥1.1 billion.
