Background

He joined Honda R&D in April 1979 and moved to Pola Cosmetics in May 1986 as head of the General Coordination Office. He became President of Pola Chemical Industries in June 1996, President of Pola Cosmetics in January 2000, and President of Pola Orbis Holdings in September 2006. His shareholding base is substantial: in the fiscal year ended December 2010, the major shareholders were the Pola Art Foundation, which he chairs, with 34.31% and he himself with 22.33%, the top two together holding 56.64%.

Selection

In September 2006 he moved from President of Pola Cosmetics to President of the newly created pure holding company Pola Orbis Holdings. He took the post after ten years as president of group companies, starting with his appointment as President of Pola Chemical Industries in June 1996. The appointment coincided with the establishment of the holding company, which adopted a structure placing Pola and Orbis side by side as operating companies.

Initiatives

In 2012 the company acquired Australia's Jurlique, its first major overseas M&A deal. From 2017 it sold its pharmaceutical and pdc businesses to narrow its brands. Consolidated revenue grew from ¥170.8 billion in the fiscal year ended December 2008 to ¥248.6 billion in FY ended December 2018, and operating income rose to ¥39.5 billion. In FY ended December 2020, amid the pandemic, revenue fell to ¥176.3 billion and operating income to ¥13.8 billion, and in FY ended December 2022, his final year, they were ¥166.3 billion and ¥12.6 billion. In January 2023 he handed the presidency to Yoshikazu Yokote.
