Background

After joining Shiseido in 1982, he served as President of Schwarzkopf in 1996 and of Wella Japan in 1999, and from 2004 led the Professional Care division at P&G. He returned to Shiseido as a full-time adviser in October 2006, became Executive Officer and Managing Director in January 2007, and a Director in June 2008. He appears to have been not a career employee from the mainstream of domestic cosmetics but someone who had viewed the hair care and salon markets from the side of foreign companies.

Education: International College of Commerce, Faculty of Commerce (now Tokyo International University, Faculty of Commerce) (1982)

Selection

In April 2011 he became President, succeeding Shinzo Maeda, who moved to Chairman. In the previous fiscal year, ended March 2011, consolidated revenue was ¥670.7 billion and operating income ¥44.5 billion, while net income had fallen from ¥33.6 billion the year before to ¥12.7 billion. Employees had grown from 28,810 in FY ended March 2009 to 31,310 in FY ended March 2011, swelling by about 2,500 in two years. The appointment appears to have applied his experience running hair care businesses at foreign companies to rebuilding an organization that had spread overseas.

Initiatives

He inherited U.S.-based Bare Escentuals, acquired for about $1.7 billion in total in January 2010 under his predecessor. Consolidated results fell from revenue of ¥682.3 billion and operating income of ¥39.1 billion in the fiscal year ended March 2012 to ¥677.7 billion and ¥26.0 billion in FY ended March 2013, and the company posted a net loss of ¥14.6 billion.
