Background

As of November 1955 he was Managing Director and also head of Finance. He was still Managing Director in November 1960 and had become Senior Managing Director by May 1962. He was a career employee from finance who joined the Osaka branch in 1926. As of November 1960 the largest shareholder was Sumitomo Trust Bank with 16.0%, followed by Asahi Mutual Life, Sumitomo Life and Nippon Fire and Marine with 3.3% each, and the founding family was not in the top ten. It appears to have been a company whose capital was held by financial institutions and whose management was in the hands of career employees.

Education: Kobe Higher Commercial School (now Kobe University) (1926)

Selection

He became President, succeeding Takao Ito. The officer list for the fiscal year ended May 1962 shows Ito as President and Mori as Senior Managing Director, and the one for FY ended May 1966 shows Ito as Chairman and Mori as President. Revenue had grown from ¥31.7 billion in FY ended November 1963 to ¥40.0 billion in FY ended November 1964, the year he took office. The company had set up the sales arm Shiseido Shoji in October 1959 and that November begun mass-producing lotions and emulsions at the cosmetics-only plant in Ofuna, Kanagawa, so the change came just after the sales company and mass-production plant were in place. The appointment appears to have applied his experience with the numbers, from head of Finance to Senior Managing Director, to financing and profit management suited to the expansion.

Initiatives

In Japan the company operated a chain system that organized retailers centrally, and on this point it was compared with Nakayama Taiyodo's approach of wholesaling to agents. Following Shiseido of Hawaii, set up in 1962, it launched Shiseido Cosmetics (America) in August 1965 and entered the U.S. market in earnest. Rather than buying local companies, it built its own sales channel by placing beauty consultants it had trained itself on the sales floor. Revenue was ¥40.0 billion in the fiscal year ended November 1964 and ¥53.8 billion in FY ended November 1966.
