Background

As of November 1955 he was a Director and deputy head of the research laboratory, and by November 1960 he had moved to head of the Chemical Research Laboratory. He was still a Director in May 1962 and became Managing Director only in May 1966. He was a founding-family president with a long career in research, but without a shareholding behind him. As of May 1970, before he took office, the top shareholders were Asahi Mutual Life, Sumitomo Life and Nippon Fire, and the Fukuhara family did not appear in the top ten. Family ties appear to have survived only in the management seats, while the capital was in the hands of financial institutions.

Education: Duke University (1941)

Selection

He became President, succeeding Hideo Okauchi, who had served eight years. The officer list for the fiscal year ended November 1974 shows Fukuhara as President and Okauchi as Chairman. In FY ended November 1974, when he took office, revenue grew to ¥171.7 billion from ¥155.4 billion the year before, while ordinary income fell from ¥15.1 billion to ¥13.8 billion and net income from ¥7.0 billion to ¥6.3 billion. The year before, in 1973, the company controlled cosmetics distribution through 89 sales companies and a voluntary chain of about 16,000 affiliated stores. The change appears to have entrusted the founding family with restoring the profitability of the expanded sales network.

Initiatives

In July 1975 the company completed the Kakegawa plant, which began operating that October. Earnings recovered while production capacity grew, and in the fiscal year ended November 1977, the year he stepped down, the company earned revenue of ¥250.5 billion, ordinary income of ¥22.0 billion and net income of ¥9.3 billion. In FY ended November 1974, his first year, revenue had been ¥171.7 billion, ordinary income ¥13.8 billion and net income ¥6.3 billion, so ordinary income rose 1.6 times in three years. Sales were handled by the 89 sales companies and the voluntary chain of about 16,000 affiliated stores, and the added production appears to have flowed through that network.
