Background

He joined Minolta in April 1977 and became an Executive Officer in July 2002. With the integration with Konica in August 2003 he became Managing Executive Officer of Konica Minolta, and in June 2006 Director and Managing Executive Officer. A president from the Minolta side, he became head of the company 11 years after the integration and 37 years after joining.

Education: Waseda University, Faculty of Commerce (1977)

Selection

In April 2014 he became President, succeeding Masatoshi Matsuzaki. He was promoted after eight years as a Director from June 2006. In the fiscal year before he took office, ended March 2014, revenue was ¥943.7 billion and operating income ¥58.1 billion, both up from ¥813.0 billion and ¥40.7 billion the year before. Following a predecessor who had been there before the integration, the appointment of someone from the Minolta side meant the presidency alternated between the two merged companies.

Initiatives

In 2017 the company acquired U.S.-based Ambry Genetics, expanding beyond office equipment. Revenue grew to ¥1,059.1 billion with operating income of ¥62.4 billion in the fiscal year ended March 2019, but operating income fell to ¥8.2 billion with a net loss of ¥3.0 billion in FY ended March 2020, and in FY ended March 2021 revenue was ¥863.3 billion with an operating loss of ¥16.3 billion. Losses continued in FY ended March 2022, his final year, with revenue of ¥911.4 billion, an operating loss of ¥22.3 billion and a net loss of ¥26.1 billion.
