Background

He joined the Research Institute of Industrial Science at Kyushu University in November 1970 and became a lecturer there in January 1979. He joined Dainippon Ink and Chemicals in March 1981 as a mid-career hire at age 37. He became head of the Printing Materials Technology Division in March 1994, Director and assistant to the officer in charge of Engineering in June 2000, and Managing Director and head of the Printing Materials Business Segment in June 2002, handling both the technology and the business of printing inks, the company's core business since its founding in 1908. As of the fiscal year ended March 2008 he held 102,000 shares.

Selection

He became Senior Managing Director and head of the Printing Materials Business Segment in June 2003, Senior Managing Director and assistant to the President in April 2004, and Representative Director and President that June. It took him 19 years from joining to become a Director. On the same officer list, Representative Director and Executive Vice President Kazuo Sugie had joined in April 1970 and become a Director in June 2001, and Director and Senior Managing Executive Officer Shunji Ehara had also joined in April 1970 and become a Director in June 2003. Oe joined 11 years after both of them, yet became a Director and President before them.

Initiatives

In April 2005 the company received a capital redemption for its stake in Kodak Polychrome Graphics, a printing materials maker it had set up as a joint venture with U.S.-based Eastman Kodak, and the venture became a wholly owned subsidiary of Kodak. In September that year it sold the Reichhold group, including U.S.-based Reichhold Chemicals, which it had acquired through a tender offer in September 1987, in a management buyout. In April 2008, marking its 100th anniversary, it changed its name from Dainippon Ink and Chemicals to DIC, and he became President and Chief Executive Officer at the same time. In the fiscal year ended March 2006 the largest shareholder was Mitsubishi Chemical with 10.09%.
